Quote on a Sungday

Standard

I have come to the conclusion that politics are too serious a matter to be left to the politicians.

— Charles De Gaulle

Even Napoleon knew it: “In politics, absurdity is not a handicap.” And boy, are there some handicapped politicians out and about… I’m not sure how many of you follow Belgian politics (I’ve written a small bit on it previously), but it is almost painful to see how these grown, adult men and women almost refuse the idea of agreeing with each other. I am not a political analyst, I have no clue how the game is/should be played and I have absolutely NO desire for Flanders to be independent, but really, they’ve gotten me to the point where I’d rather live in an independent, governed Flanders than in a federal, ungoverned Belgium. The last stable government we had was before 2007, I say we call it a draw and move on? Please…

What the Plain White T’s have to do with that? Oh… Back in 2007, radio-presentor Peter van De Veire and his side-kick Sofie Lemaire recorded this version of the song, begging Yves Leterme to finally form a government – which took 284 days to form (two hundred eighty-four, it is not a typo). While we’re currently at a mere 100 days, the déjà-vu feeling gets stronger every day…
